2021-22 Education and Enrichment
Education and Enrichment
The New York Flute Club sponsors a multifaceted program designed to include students of all ages and levels who study flute in the greater New York City area. We have been developing relationships with schools, teachers, and music outreach programs. Special events have included pre-concert workshops and demonstrations, opportunities for students to meet the performers, and career development seminars. In addition, we offer scholarships for recommended students to attend the annual flute fair free of charge.
If you’re interested in contributing program suggestions or time, please contact Amy Appleton, our education chair.
Information about education/enrichment events in past seasons may be found here.
We thank the Friends of Flutes Foundation, lifetime NYFC member Ardith Bondi, and other anonymous donors for their generous contributions to our education programs. If you would like to support our ongoing education efforts, click here.
Past event: Warm-ups and performance preparation with Sooyun Kim
Sunday, February 20, 2022 • 3:30 - 4:30 pm
Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, 152 West 66th Street, NYC.
In-person workshop
Flutist Sooyun Kim will be leading an interactive educational workshop prior to her 5:30 pm concert on Sunday, February 20th. Join Sooyun to learn about what warm-up routines she uses to get mentally and physically prepared for a performance!
The target audience for this workshop is student flutists currently in school; ideally intermediate to advanced students but all experience levels are welcome. Participants will be encouraged to share ways they prepare for a concert, and what challenges they experience. Sooyun will demonstrate some warm-ups that participants will be able to use in their own practice. As we start to gather and perform in person again, we hope this workshop will help student flutists build confidence to perform at their best.
To RSVP, please email education@nyfluteclub.org with your name and how many years you've been playing the flute so we can tailor the workshop to participant needs. Note that there will be a place to wait for the time period between the workshop and concert for participants who do not wish to leave and return. More details here.

Virtual workshop

The New York Flute Club is excited to announce that flutist Alhelí Pimienta will be leading an interactive educational workshop before her concert on Sunday, November 21st. The workshop will be held synchronously on Zoom at 4:30pm; participants are encouraged to turn their camera on! The concert that follows starts at 5:30pm.
Join Alhelí to explore Latin American classically-inspired music for flute and the stories behind a few of the pieces that she will perform during the concert. She will share about her own story, including what it’s like to be an artist of color, a “cultural ambassador” and how she works to connect people across borders through music. Participants are encouraged to share their own stories, too! As an added bonus, a few of the composers of music featured in the concert will be gifting sheet music for their songs to the participants who attend this workshop. The target audience is student flutists at the beginner to intermediate level, but ALL are welcome to attend, students and adults. We hope to see you at this inspiring workshop.
