The Jazz Flute Workshop immerses Club members, “jazz newbies” and experienced alike, in the joy of musical improvisation as applied in the jazz idiom, which originated in 19th-century America. An experienced jazz flutist coordinates this activity in which players of varying abilities expand their musical horizons. Participants in the Jazz Flute Workshop will perform publicly at various times throughout the season, including a concert at the-feature near season’s end.

We meet in-person once a month, usually on the first or second Sunday from 2:00-4:00 pm, October through May, and are slated to play a concert at the annual Flute Fair (this year on Sunday, March 30, 2025). Rehearsals are at National Opera Center, 330 7th Ave. NYC 10001. Dates are posted below.

To join the Jazz Flute Workshop, send an email with the subject heading "Interested in Jazz Flute Workshop" to Chip Shelton at chiplutes@aol.com and return the short applicant questionnaire that will be sent to you. Space is limited; reserve your spot now! Once enrolled, you will receive PDF files of the music, etc. on an ongoing basis, via email. Note that

  • You must be a current member of the NY Flute Club to participate.
  • No audition is required. We accept all levels of players, either as “principal” or “alternate” members, based on studio space capacities.
