Our March 10, 2018 Meet-up

The NYFC Ensemble flutists met at Studios 353 on Saturday, March 10, with 26 members in attendance (25 returning and one new). Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group in a run-through of pieces being considered for the Annual Meeting concert in May. Lauren Klasewitz conducted the group in a reading of Michael Isaacson's Sugarplums and Mistletoe. The answers to the intermission question, "Tell us the weirdest job you ever had" drew a wide range of answers—pony boy at the Bronx Zoo, sorter of sand grains according to size, concession stand operator at a Buddhist temple—but the hands-down favorite response was from Roger Brooks: stationed at a US army base in Germany, he once had to perform in a military band for the installation of a traffic light.
Our February 18, 2018 Meet-up and February 25, 2018 Flute Fair Performance

The NYFC Ensemble flutists met at Studios 353 on Sunday, February 18. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group in a run-through of the large-ensemble pieces on the program for the Flute Fair performance on Sunday, February 25. The answers to the intermission question, "Do you worry about bothering the neighbors when you practice?" showed a very clear demarcation between home owners (no worries) and apartment dwellers (lots of variety, depending on wall thickness and neighbor temperament).
The Flute Fair concert went well, with 27 flutists performing. Ensemble pieces played by the full group included two J.S. Bach fugues from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2, arranged by NYFC member Malcolm Spector and Jonathan Cohen's Flutes and Vegetables. Smaller ensembles played two trios (Jacques Castérède's Flûtes en Vacances and Gary Schocker's Flutes in the Garden) and a sextet (Ricky Lombardo's Traffic Jam).

Our January 13, 2018 Meet-up

Twenty-three NYFC flutists met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Sunday, January 13. The performance scheduled for the Flute Fair (on Sunday, February 25) is coming up soon.
At intermission, people were asked people to describe their first flutes. There were the usual Gemeinhardts and Artleys, but some rare ones as well: one Reynolds and two Haynes-Schwelms.
Our December 17, 2017 Meet-up

Twenty-three NYFC flutists met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Sunday, December 17. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group in readings of some holiday favorites, including a "Chinese Danse" arrangement from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite.
At intermission, people were asked to describe a concert that they had recently attended or performed in. Several players mentioned concerts in which they had played both on flute and another instrument (clarinet and/or piano). It was noted that the NYFC Ensemble has been invited to play at the Flute Fair on February 25, 2018. The program will include pieces for the full group as well as smaller ensemble pieces. A sign-up sheet will be sent out soon.
Our November 18, 2017 Meet-up

Twenty-four NYFC flutists met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Saturday, November 18. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group through our repertoire pieces, with a focus on musicality now that most of us have the notes. A highlight of the session was the presence of Lee Koss and her contrabass flute.
The intermission question, "If you could invite a composer to your Thanksgiving meal this year, who would it be, and why?" provoked some interesting answers. Leonard Bernstein, with five potential hosts, was the overwhelming favorite and the only composer to be mentioned more than once or twice.
Our October 15, 2017 Meet-up

A record number of NYFC flutists (4 new and 26 returning) met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Sunday, October 15. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group through Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances, Kelly Via's Fantasia on Red River Valley, David Holsinger's On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss, Ricky Lombardo arrangements of Simple Gifts and Fiesta Canciones Folklóricas, and a Bill Holcombe arrangement of selections from The Sound of Music. The focus was on intonation (quite remarkably good, considering the number of players) and dynamics.
The intermission question, "Tell us about a book you are reading or have recently read" produced many interesting responses (as well as some post-rehearsal one-on-one discussions). Most everyone in the group came away with new ideas for their reading lists and/or more motivation to practice.

A record number of NYFC flutists (5 new and 23 returning) met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Saturday, September 16. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group through several pieces new to our repertoire and a neglected movement of an old favorite (Respighi's Ancient Airs and Dances). The new pieces were Kelly Via's Fantasia on Red River Valley, Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirits (with soloist Mark Vickers), Jonathan Cohen's Flutes and Vegetables, David Holsinger's On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss, a Ricky Lombardo arrangement of Simple Gifts, and a Bill Holcombe arrangement of selections from The Sound of Music.
At intermission, the two most common responses to "Tell us what you will miss most about the summer" seemed to be "I won't miss it at all" and (from the teachers) "Not having to work."
