Our March 9, 2019 Meet-up

     Twenty-three NYFC flutists (all returning) attended the ensemble program meeting on Saturday March 9, 2019 at Studios 353 on West 48th Street. The group worked on repertoire planned for the May 19 concert, which will include pieces conducted by NYFC Ensemble member Lauren Klasewitz and co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers. 
     The break-the-ice question at intermission ("What are you most looking forward to about spring?") had fairly predictable answers: more sun, less cold weather, seeing favorite flowers and trees in bloom again.

Our February 23, 2019 Meet-up

     Twenty-six NYFC flutists (3 new and 23 returning) attended the ensemble program meeting on Saturday February 23, 2019 in a second-floor room at Studios 353 on West 48th Street. The group worked on most of the season's repertoire, led by co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers.
     The break-the-ice question at intermission ("Name a movie you recently enjoyed") was a nod to the 2019 Oscar Awards ceremony scheduled for the next day. The answers indicated that many in the group are not regular movie goers. The prize for the most intriguing answer probably goes to the person who mentioned Liz and the Blue Bird, an animated Japanese film that focuses on the relationship between a confident flutist and a shy oboe player.

Our January 27, 2019 Meet-up

     Thirty-two NYFC flutists (3 new and 29 returning) and four "auditors" (longtime member Robert Thomason and three visiting family members) attended the ensemble program meeting on January 27, 2019 in a second-floor room at Studios 353 on West 48th Street. Definitely a record for the number of people at one NYFC Ensemble rehearsal!  The group worked on most of the season's repertoire, led by co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers and assistant conductor Lauren Klasewitz. Intonation seemed much improved, even with the large number of flutists.
     The break-the-ice question at intermission was to name a current or past course taken (preferably not related to music). The answers included yoga (recently started by three people), literature and history classes from long-ago college days, and continuing education courses in studio art, croissant-making, fencing, machine shop, and NYC tree identification.

Our December 15, 2018 Meet-up

     Twenty-three NYFC flutists (2 new and 21 returning) and three observers (visiting family members) attended the ensemble program meeting on December 15, 2018 at Studios 353 on West 48th Street. The music rehearsed represented a variety of musical styles and countries: Spain, Scotland, Russia, Latin America, Cuba, America (USA), and fantasy.

     Twenty-five NYFC flutists (1 new and 24 returning) met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street on Sunday, November 18. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group, assisted by NYFC member Lauren Klasewitz.
     At intermission people named their favorite (or least favorite) holiday. The responses included “Any holiday I don’t have to work,” universally warm thoughts about Thanksgiving, and ambivalance about Christmas (“I love the presents,” “Too much focus on presents,” and “My favorite holiday even though I celebrate Hanukkah.”).

Our October 20, 2018 Meet-up

     Twenty-six NYFC flutists (6 new and 20 returning) met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street (basement room) on Saturday, October 20. Co-directors Denise Koncelik and Mark Vickers led the group through the season's repertoire sightread at the previous session.
     In keeping with the season, the intermission question was, "Tell us about your favorite Halloween costume or scariest movie." People typically recalled their own costumes (most memorable were ones leaving the wearer unrecognizable to his or her friends), those of their kids (a walking stick of butter, for one), or those seen in Halloween parades (a dancing Tetris set and a portable set of living room furniture). The winner for scariest movie was Night of the Living Dead.

     Twenty-eight NYFC flutists (4 new and 24 returning) met at Studios 353 on West 48th Street (basement room) on Sunday, September 16. Co-director Denise Koncelik led the group through new repertoire planned for the coming season, including original compositions by McGinty (Masques), McMichael (A Gaelic Offering), Powning (Children's Suite), and Wood (Pedazitos) and an arrangement of Sousa's Washington Post march. Lauren Klasewitz conducted some seemingly minimalist-inspired Gina Luciani arrangements of video game themes. Co-director Mark Vickers, recouperating from a recent medical procedure, expects to be at the next rehearsal.
     At intermission,  the responses to "Tell us something new you did this summer and whether you would do it again" included first-time visits to new places (Ireland, Cape Cod, Maine, and the Grand Canyon), starting lessons on new instruments (Irish harp and violin), and building a PVC bass flute.
